    Worth the fight

THE stories that lift the spirit are sometimes to be found in unlikely places. Not all heroes live remarkable lives. Small stones set rolling can start an avalanche.

In Brooklyn, the local New Apostolic congregation has adopted the Paarden Eiland Wetland with a view to cleaning and greening the area.

A small beginning: sixty saplings were nursed until they can be planted where they will do most good. More are to follow. Eventually, they hope, Zoar Park will be a welcoming green haven for both birds and people.

In Table View, the local Ratepayers Association has taken up the cause of the Blouberg Animal Trust in their efforts to acquire a piece of land to establish an animal welfare shelter.

They hope, in the process, to save the existing trees on what used to be the Potsdam Outspan. It is impossible not to be inspired by their vision of the many good things than can be done with this rare piece of wooded land in Table View.

The trouble with the world we live in today is that we have become used to leaving all the important stuff, and it need not be huge and imposing, to officialdom and politicians.

People so easily give their power away when they perceive a cause to be lost. They forget that a community united in mind and spirit is a formidable force.

We hope our heroes get the support they need. Some things are just worth fighting for.
