    Upmarket open space to come
    LOUISA STEYL

A PLAN for a quality public space in Goodwood is to be put in place after it received unanimous approval at the De Grendel Sub-Council meeting held recently.

Initailly, the sub-Council had planned to create a fan park at the Goodwood sports complex for 2010, but after the city decided to restrict the number of sites for these parks, a change to a dignified place for the sub-Council was discussed with role?players and the sporting fraternities.

The civic proposal would still support the sportfield infrastructure with R350 000 in funds budgeted for this facility.

The civic centre was identified for the establishment of a dignified space due to its history and associated public facilities.

According to Councillor Clive Justus, ward councillor for the Goodwood area, the civic centre has always been the heart of Goodwood.

Around it there are also the Goodwood library, the Dirkie Uys clinic, the Memorial garden, the Goodwood musuem, the Goodwood Mall as well as JG Meiring High School, Koos Sadie Primary School and the Wingfield Technical College.

The consultants, Msingi, have been appointed by the City of Cape Town to drive the landscaping programme and have formulated a comprehensive phased plan for the project.

The first phase will see a roadway and footway upgrade along Dingle and Mc Donald Streets, linking the clinic, library and civic centre.

Cobbles or bricks will be layed to set out a subtly defined “space”. The purpose is to create a pedestrian prioritised area, but it is important to note that traffic aspects will not be changed.

There is also a plan for improved informal trading in Dingle Road and tree planting in both Dingle Road and Mc Donald Street.

The next phases will look at the footways and roads between Voortrekker and Dingle Roads, in front of the Presbyterian Church and Goodwod Mall, as well as the library.

Improvements are planned for the public park and Merriman Street, in front of JG Meiring High School and the Cultural Hall.

A definitive connection will also be made between the museum and the civic hall or memorial garden.

Councillor Justus says that the legacy of this project will be the regeneration of the precinct.

The quality public space project aims at grouping all the community facilities in the precinct and drawing more visitors to the area.
