Second round to be even better
    IAN LITTLE

WITH Transcape Steel and AWH Motors having moved in as the sponsors of the 2008 / 2009 Cape Hell Drivers summer oval track championship at Killarney, spectators can look forward to an even better show during the second round of the championship on Saturday evening.

The 1660 Rite Auto Electric class in particular, came out swinging during the opening meeting last month.

Benefiting from a large field and several new drivers, there were enough incidents and accidents to keep the crowd excited and on their feet from start to finish.

Eventually it was Zack Groenewald who stayed out of trouble and scored the most points of the evening.

Former Mini youngster Steven Heydenrych did well to win the second heat before receiving a heavy smack in the back that launched him into the safety wall during the final.

With turbo power at his disposal Johan Spies was in magnificent form during the Speedspot (Cape Town) Hot Rod events. He was able to stay ahead of multiple former champion Jesse Huggett in all three heats.

Whether he can manage that again on Saturday, remains to be seen.

With the thundering V8’s chasing national points last month, they all start from scratch on Saturday. However, judging from their performances that night, the ones to look out for are going to include the Spies brothers, Johan and Izak, Thys van Eck, Mannetjies Fontini and the versatile Kosie Weyers.

A big change here, is that Jesse Huggett has decided to concentrate on the Hot Rod class in future, with the result that his André Groenewald Motors V8 is going to be driven by Ernst Heydenrych.

Other events will be held for 2.1-litre Ace Doors Modifieds, André Groenewald Motors Minis and Fouché Engineering Midgets.

Gates open at 15:00 with the first race due off at 18:00. Admission is R35 for adults and R10 for children from six to 12. There is no charge for kiddies under six.
