THE well-known saying: The older the wine gets, the better it becomes, can certainly also be applicable to the brilliant performances of the two well-known Tygerberg master road athletes Vladimir Kotov and Albertus Bock.
Running in Western Province colours in last Saturday’s Nedbank South African 10 km championship race in Stellenbosch, Kotov was not only crowned SA champion in the 50+ master division, but he also completed the fast, flat course in the cold and windy conditions in a new Western Province record time of 32:39.
Bock sprung a major surprize by winning the title and gold medal in the 60+ master division in a time of 38:13.
Other Tygerberg athletes who completed the event in Western Province colours include the 16- year-old Jeromy Andreas (32:02), J-P. Abrahams (32:04) and Johnny Persents (32:58). Kotov and Persents were also members of the WP masters’ team who won the team competition and gold medal in this age group.
Best Tygerberger in the women’s race was Elmarie Coetzee. The slender Adidas athlete crossed the line in 38:47 to earn the bronze medal in the 40+ age category.
Coetzee was also a member of the Western Province women masters’ team who claimed the gold medal in ther age division.
The junior Destiny Titus (11th overall in 38:32), Sheryl de Lange (40:57) and Linda Hanekom (41:58) also enjoyed a successful outing in the Eikestad. Titus and Hanekom are still juniors.
