AJAX CAPE TOWN faces another daunting experience when they tackle Platinum Stars in the first round of the Telkom Knockout Cup at Athlone Stadium on Saturday evening.
History has it that the Urban Warriors have achieved two major successes in a somewhat consistent run in the lucrative knockout competitions of the Premier Soccer League (PSL).
Ajax beat Orlando Pirates in the Rothman’s Cup Final in 2000, and in 2007 they defeated Mamelodi Sundowns 2-0 in the Absa Cup Final.
The clash with Platinum Stars will also conjure memories of Ajax’s 3-1 demise at the hands of Stars in the 2006 Telkom Cup Final.
Ajax coach Craig Rosslee, however, dismisses speculation that his charges regard the forthcoming clash as a “revenge match”.
“What counts most is the fact that we have a good home record and the players are aware we just need to win three matches to reach the final,” says Rosslee.
All the participating teams in the Telkom Knockout Cup will receive R250 000, and the winner will pocket R4 million.
The showdown in Athlone, starting at 20:15 on Saturday, could bring out the best in Ajax’s stalwart left flank defender Brett Evans, who has featured prominently in both of Ajax’s successful efforts in cup competitions.
Ajax’s adventurous Brazilian central defenders, Eduardo Ferreira, Granwald Scott and Franklin Cale, also possess the right temperament for these do-or-die clashes.
Platinum Stars carry a wealth of talent and experience, with midfielder Godfrey Sapula (ex-Sundowns), Willem Jackson and goalkeeper Wayne Sandiland rendering invaluable assistance to stabilise the team. Sapula, with several Bafana Bafana caps under his belt, thrives on a quick one-two passing game, and his presence has turned Henrico Botes into a constant threat up front.
In another first round cup match, neighbours Santos are away to Bloemfontein Celtic at 15:00 on Sunday in Bloemfontein. Tickets for the Ajax vs Stars match are on sale at all Computicket branches, and at Shoprite/Checkers stores.
. The Ajax vs Stars and Santos vs Celtic matches will televised live on SABC1
