A REUNION beckons for all former Aerials soccer players, whose successes included becoming the first winners of the coveted Maggot Trophy in the old Western Province Football Board (WPFB) in 1958.

Among other nostalgic moments, Aerials’ win over Woodsides in the cup final 50 years ago will inevitably be a talking point at the reunion. The get-together will take place at the Ashford Athletic clubhouse in Heathfield on Sunday 16 November at 14:00.

The champion Aerials side, which played out of the old Alliance FA in Claremont at the time, was captained by Basil D’Oliveira, who went on to play test cricket for England in the 1970s.

Other renowned players in that team were Ivan Dagnin, Challa Links, Graham Cousins, Norman Schaffers and Cheeky Swartz.

Dagnin carries the distinction of collecting the most winners’ medals (five in all) in the history of the Maggot Trophy – hailed as the champion of champions event in the amateur WPFB for close to three decades.

He went on to join Woodsides and played a vital role in the successes of the now defunct club from the Cape District FA at Wynberg. Woodsides recorded an unmatched record of winning the Maggot Trophy for four consecutive years (1965 to 1968).

All former Aerials members and fans, as well as their soccer rivals of yester-year, are welcome at the reunion. Call Ivan Dagnin on 074 309 0006 or Joe Schaffers on 083 765 7276.

The Aerials reunion comes at a time when other clubs (some dormant) are planning similar functions.

. The old boys of Magnolias AFC will get together on Sunday 16 November at the residence of Eric “Palla” Williams at the corner of 16th Avenue and Beaufort Road, Kensington, at 15:00. Magnolias, which merged with Mowglies to form Factreton United, would have turned 80 next year. Call Brian Hagins on 078 585 9445 or John Esau on 082 371 2568.

. Devonshire Rovers will hold a pre-80th anniversary tournament for u/7s and u/9s at the William Herbert Sports Complex, Wynberg, on Saturday 11 October. The tournament will coincide with the knockout finals of the LFA Cape District.

. Battswood (LFA Cape District), celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2009, will hold a reunion on Saturday 11 October.
