    New champ crowned
    JASON ACAR

IN a split second Rayana Ameeroedien launched her long time Muay Thai career to the highest level at the Sons of Africa International Muay Thai Tournament.

This came in the second round when she sent her opponent, Nongkarn Borna, to the mat to claim the women’s World Bantamweight Title for the first time in her career at the event which was held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) last Saturday.

“In the first round she came out aggressively with strong kicks to my head and body which I managed to evade and countered with strong punches to her face. She caught me with a powerful kick to my ribs but I answered with straight punches which I knew hurt her,” says Ameeroedien.

This was her rematch against the Thai fighter, having lost the first encounter via a points decision in Thailand.

But the defending champion would have thought she was fighting a different opponent on Saturday as Ameeroedien went through intense training prior to the event.

“The SA national anthem was sung by the crowd before the fight started, was a moving experience and I knew I had to win. The second round started off more aggressively with both of us going hard, but I dominated more at this stage. I cornered her and caught her with a left hook to the head and it was the the straight right to the body which sent her to the ground.”

Borna was glued to the mat and this resulted in an impressive second round knock-out victory for Ameeroedien.

The second main event saw Ramazan Ramazanov hold on to the World Heavyweight Title with a dominant performance over Gauteng fighter, Pete Motaung.

True his nickname, The Punisher, he landed blow after blow to wear his opponenet down.

He won the match by technical knock-out when Motaung’s corner threw in the towel in the second round to end the fight.
