THE long awaited new V8 Masters Series is due to get off to a flying start when the big cars take to the track for the first time during the 18 race programme at Killarney on Saturday.
The first race is something of a shakedown to allow drivers to become more familiar with their powerful new mounts and will not form part of any championship.
Despite that, more experienced drivers like former South African Superkart champion Marcel Angel and former Audi Quattro works driver Chris Aberdien, are expected to be able to lap faster than anything else on the track that day.
The Nashua Porsche Club Cup cars are also going to be in action..
However, the Indy Oil Clubman category has attracted the largest entry and there should be close racing in every class.
Although the weather may also play a part, the battle up front between the young Kosie Weyers in his hot VW Golf and the BMW’s of Nieyaaz Modack and Achmat Achmat, could turn out to be one of the highlights of the day.
Although Ian Long was the quickest in practice, he had problems during the events and Andries van Eeden and Francois Venter were able to win one race each in the Powerflow VW GTi Challenge, during the most recent meeting at Killarney.
It will now be interesting to see which of the three comes out on top this time.
While Wally Dolinschek’s mighty Ford Mustang GT2 seems to be out on its own in the NA Carrera Sports GT and Touring Car events, there should be a close fight behind him between Shaun Sale’s Touring Car, Louis de Jager (Lola T212) and Colin Howard’s Mazda rotary powered FvH 7.
The meeting is also going to feature events for CAR Magazine Classic Cars and CSS Formula Libre single seaters. There will also be races for Suzuki South Superbikes as well as Classic Motorcycles and BOTT twins.
Because the recent inclement weather has slowed the resurfacing of the main entry road, spectators may be asked to use the North (Malmesbury) gate, or the Cape Town (Motocross), gate. Once inside they will be able to drive to the best vantage points.
Gates open at 07:30, with the first race off at 09:30. Admission is R40 for adults and R10 for scholars under 16. No charge for u. 12.
