The body known as ‘kukhanya kweLanga Region was established by concerned clubs after seeing “rugga was dying ekasie”.

Ukukhanya’s official, Anele Zita, said since the 1992 unification process, the game has suffered in the townships.

“This is a ploy to mobilize black clubs so we can grow our rugby,” said Zita.

On Sunday teams affiliated to the unit played in Khayelitsha Rugby Stadium and judging by attendance one could easily assume that Zita’s ambitions are being fulfilled.

Home Defenders RFC locked horns with Khaya Rose and from the first whistle each wanted to impose itself on the other.

Within ten minutes of play Khaya Rose’s eighthman Lulama Bululu, scored a try. Home Defenders replied via a Thembalethu Ndlumbini try, but were still trailing 10-3 at half time.

It must have been harsh words from Defenders coach Zola Pute that propelled his side to place two tries within the opening minutes of the second half. But that was not enough because Bululu again scored taking the score to 15-13 in favour of Rose.

Rose’s coach Msekeli Mavakala was happy with his team’s game.
