Local kids’ drawings a big hit
    MIKE NKALANE

GUGULETU’s Luzuko Primary School has made history as Fruit and Veg City item bags bearing drawings made by learners, as well as their names, are used in these stores nationwide as from last Thursday.

Ten drawings were chosen from 30 submitted. The young artists were awarded certificates. The project was run by the school and Fruit and Veg City via the Feedback Feeding Project.

This comes after the school staff applied for the food from Feedback last year for their learners who go to school on empty stomachs.Feedback asked them to identify those learners. The learners were then asked to submit drawings and declare their aspirations and career dreams.

Deputy principal Mzwandile Jonas said they (teachers) felt obliged to organise food after witnessing the plight of learners who attend on empty stomachs.

“We asked Feedback for the food supply for the learners in need. We were asked to identify those learners. We were told to ask them to draw anything and submit their work to Feedback. We searched for the skillful learners,” said Jonas.

He said since Monday a week ago the school has been over the moon after being informed that their learners’ drawings will be attached to the Fruit and Veg City bags. The drawings are from grades 2, 3,4 and 5.

Nomakula Mrubata,Community Development manager at Feedback, told the learners that the day marked Fruit and Veg City’s long-term investment in the community.

“A R2 for each bag purchased will go towards feeding the needy.Fruit and Veg will make sure that feedback operation would be on a bigger scale. This will help to raise funds for the impoverished communities,” she promised.

An elated Sinazo Gunguluza (8) grade 2 learner who learned the art of drawing from her elder brother, said she was keen to submit her work as she loves drawing. She said: “I can’t explain my happiness.I knew my certificate was always on the cards.”

An ecstatic Banele Mbili (10) grade 5 learner who started drawing in 2004, said his passion has been finally rewarded.Expressing his joy he said: “Since I started drawing I’ve been blamed at home and always shouted at for littering my drawing papers.I am always on the look-out for something to draw.” He says he would like to be an ambulance driver when he grows up.

Book People also donated 300 books to start the school library.Russell Nelson of Book People told the learners that their books are not for free because they are too expensive but when they were shown their (learners) art they were impressed.
