ABOUT 400 grade six learners discovered the importance of recycling and greening the environment through collecting waste around the community.
Last week environmentalists from various organizations gathered at Lwazi Primary School to inform these learners about waste management.
On-site Waste Management’s team leader, Alta van Zyl, gave tips on how to collect refuse wisely.
“Keep paper, glass, cans, motor oil, metal, plastics and electronics separate when disposing them because this makes it easier for recycling,” he said.
Learners had an opportunity to ask questions and comment.
“I will not litter in public space ever again and I will teach my friends and family about recycling to safe the environment”, said Lumka Hlakula.
Other learners vowed to make a difference in the community through keeping it clean.
Ward councillor Belinda Landingwe advised learners to preserve the environment.
“Do not litter because by doing you are killing our nature, ” she said.
Equipped with refuse plastic bags and gloves for hygiene purposes, learners took to the streets and removed waste.
June was declared by the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism as environmental month.
The aim is to educate the public regarding waste management, climate change, greening the environment, air quality and energy efficiency.
Khanyi Dlamini of Albany said it was their corporate commitment to sustain and reduce environmental footprint. She acknowledges that the amount of plastic that is set to landfill is enormous.
If members of the community need to recycle glass they may send it to a deport at Mingiza’ Tavern in Section 3, Guguletu .
