THE Valencia netball team of Makhaza started their game on a high note when competing in a eight-team tournament hosted by Ward 35 at Vukani Primary School grounds at Lower Crossroads on Saturday.
The games were organised by Zimeleni - a non governmental organisation- in a bid to promote social development and decrease crime.
With vocal fans on their side Valencia dusted off stiff competition from other teams.
In the finals they clobbered hosts Zibonele 20-3 while dishing free netball lessons.
Zibonele coach,Funisile Sitemela, said injuries to key players made it difficult for them.
“Numerous injuries from some of our players cost us this game.”
Victorious coach, Baxolele Pere, beaming from ear to ear said he was proud of his players.
“After losing three previous tournaments they showed readiness to play in the Western Province league by this performance,” he said.
Valencia took home a trophy and gold medals while others participants shared bronze and silver medals.
According to the games organiser Petron Sithembile their aim was to show youth that there are better things to do to brighten their future and build friendship with neighbouring areas.
Petron said he and Thelma Sithetho formed Zimelene eight years ago to keep youth away from drugs and crime.
The organisation also provide skills in bookmaking, runs crime awareness programmes and a soup kitchen for the needy.
He said they target the 16-18 year age group as they are the ones deeply involved in crime .
Petron said it was not easy starting the organisation but through the support they received fron Vukani Primary School teachers and parents they are making positive inroads.
“We are very thankful to the school and the parents but most importantly we would like to thank IBBY - a Canadian organisation- that funded us in 2006 to sustain the bookmaking project,he said.
Petron made a loud cry to businessman to please give a hand as they are struggling financially.
He urged local businesses to reach to their pockets and help organisations like Zimeleni who are trying to make a difference in the communities.
