A short walk on the lighter side also needed
    THOBILE NDZUBE

YOUR Thursday treat of your favourite community newspaper would not be complete without once in while taking a a walk to the light side of humour and looking at our current status of sport.

Yes, I am talking in particularly about the biggest supported sporting code and that is our beautiful game of soccer.

To many the term “big teams” has vanished in their vocabulary as there are no more “big teams”. Kanjani?

The term “small teams” is hardly used these days which is the way of confirming that our standard of soccer is improving, ingaba niyibona njani lento.

Gone are those days when either one of the “not so big clubs” like “Kaizer Fish”, Pirates or Sundums played other teams the score line was predictable. There is now suspense on the stands and on the playing field.

I never used to understand football even in my playing days but now I am convinced that it is round and unpredictable.

We saw last season how Kaizer Fish ended up in the top 10 only just missing the popular spot in the top 8. We saw how Sundums came from behind and took the league again.

Can they do it again this time? I wonder.

You know, at times you get so disappointed by your team that you do not even want anyone mentioning anything about it. Or you get so upset that you take it out on other people.

The way that these clubs are performing at the moment I wonder how many conflicts would one have been involved in had it been those primitive days where people ibingophuma silwe xa bebethiwe. We come a long way and let us keep it that way as sport is something to be enjoyed peacefully without any fights.

At the moment my favourite team is not doing entirely well. I even heard it from reliable source that Amathambo might be without the coach come end of the season (ungathi uve ngam). It is a norm with clubs in Mzantsi that the coach gets the boot when players under-perform.

I always wonder how it feels to be a coach in Mzantsi where the contracts could be suddenly terminated at the stroke of a button.

This has also affected our national team. I have even lost count as to the number of coaches we have made rich ever since we entered the world arena.

Now we have found a country to boost and that is Brazil.

Well then, turning our focus on to the hot seat of the top honours of the league, we see our local clubs are good contenders for the big prize. What I do not understand is the lack of support these two clubs command in our townships. What are they doing wrong? I even saw “Godzille” cheering them on to bring the cup home.

Well this week we look forward to the game between the two former giants of Mzantsi’s soccer.

You know, the hype and excitement it used to be when these two clubs played has died down. Publicity those matches used to be big and almost the whole country would know that this game would be on.

I remember the days of Abdool Bhamjee. How he would sell the game! It made you wanna just take off and be at the venue.

There would be talk about the game the whole week building up to a climax on game day. These days we do not know what to expect since kwaguga izinja ezaziluma.

I mean those days the country would virtually come to a standstill. You could even rob a bank as the security personnel would be soccer crazy and forget about their responsibility.

Mara, these days it is just an ordinary game of soccer.

Well, to the diehards like me it is always my pleasure to beat my bitter rivals.

As we all know that fish and chips are things we take for lunch.

Anyway I hope everyone is going to enjoy this game and people please, if you cannot take defeat, be a sport this time and not resort to violence. It is only a game.

We do not need to hear of any violent incidences. It’s only sport.

For that matter these two teams are not title contenders, so why waste your energy?

To end off I would like to say to all the supporters out there: make noise about your teams.

May the best team win and I know which one that is. You need to just ask me after the 11th.

We should take life simple at times. This we do by allowing that light side of life - humour to enter.
