Expressions of interest are streaming in for the Enlighten Education Trust (EET) mosaic art competition and the EET is hoping there will be lots more. The competition is being held to create an awareness of the work EET does for the greater community of Hermanus and trust manager Lois Kleyn is very excited about the scope of the competition.
It is only for young people who are not professional artists but perhaps dream of having the means to be able to become one. Someone has to win the R40 000!
The competition is open to anyone living between Gansbaai and Cape Town and in addition to the first prize there are also three merit prizes of R7 000 each. EET art facilitator, Morag Swanepoel, said some of the entrants were overwhelmed by the competition but that two information workshops have been held to brief entrants. Three mosaic workshops, facilitated by Lara Levine from Mila Mosaics, have been held to expose entrants to mosaic techniques.
The competition is for a design or drawing for a mural on the wall of the new Enlighten Trust Centre.
You don't have to be able to supply the materials or do the work constructing the mosaic. It is actually very easy to enter.
Large A1 pages are provided to you with the wall blocks to be filled in, all you need is a creative idea and some coloured pencils to put forward a drawing to wow the judges.
Morag added: If you don't have coloured pencils and need help with paper and filling out the forms you can visit the centre on Tuesday afternoons between 15:00 and 18:00 during August and we will do our best to help you. The theme is totally open - you can do anything - realistic scenes from everyday life, a story, fantasy creatures, abstract patterns - anything you can think of.
The organisers hope to attract people who are not professionals and have received 80 submissions so far.
To enter, simply sms the word mosaic to 32545 or enter on-line at www.enlightenmosaic.org.za. The closing date is 29 August. Contact Morag on 083 519 6641 or sms mohelp to 32545 if you need help with your submission.
