No damage to station site building
    Lianda Beyers Cronjé

The historic station site building that is a declared heritage structure has not been damaged by recent blasting operations.

Estelle Spaarwater, chairperson of the Overstrand Heritage and Aesthetics committee said the demolition of the parapet wall and a section of the back shed of the building do not affect the integrity of the station site buildings as these were later additions to the shed.

She added that the removal of this section will free the gable and return the building to its original status.

Spaarwater confirmed that the demolition of this section was approved by the Heritage Committee and Hannes Meiring, the heritage architect appointed by Checkers in the planning stage.

“I have talked to the engineers from De Vos Paxton Incorporated who verified that the brickwork of the parapet had been removed as a safety precaution,” she said. “The engineers assured me that although further blasting will take place it will not be near the station site. Further excavations will be handled in a sensitive way so as not to cause any damage to the heritage building.”
