Celebrating his centenary birthday on Thursday 26 June, Owen Routly of Huis Lettie The-ron said the secret to a good life lies in love.
It is love that makes the world go round, he sparkled at his wife Marichen. They have been married for 71 years.
It has been a good ball and chain, he chuckled.
Routly admitted that he has been healthy all his life.
I suppose I have been lucky.
When asked about his greatest achievement, he said that he had climbed many mountains in his life.
His son Owen said that his father was a great mountaineer in his younger days who once rescued some adult scouts from the mountains at Ceres.
Routly has been responsible for the erection of telephone routes in the South and Western Cape.
The personnel and ladies of Huis Lettie Theron prepared a veritable feast to celebrate this special birthday and the table was loaded with several fancy birthday cakes and a delectable array of confectionary.
A special lunch was also prepared for all the residents in the old age home.
Huis Lettie Theron's manager Simon van Vuuren said Routly?s birthday was somewhat of an historic occasion as this is the first time that a male resident reached this respectable age.
Apart from his children and special friends who attended the milestone event, the executive mayor of the Overstrand Theo Beyleveldt and James Gray, minister of the United Church were also there to congratulate Routly.
