    Tale of two legends
    Julian Shaw

I had the privilege of playing Royal Port Alfred and Humewood whilst I was away for ten days. Two great coastal tracks. A totally different way of golf to the normal bent greens and kikuyu fairways.

I must say it really got me in the Open mood. What a fantastic tournament it was, the last day turned into a three-horse race to the finish, the defending champion Padraig Harrington, Ian Poulter - you know the one with zero dress sense - and 53-year-old Greg Norman.

I had the good fortune to meet Greg last year and he was a complete gentleman - I was rooting for him. Sadly he did not manage it; Padraig played fabulous golf and is a worthy champion.

Playing at Humewood on Saturday, (I was the pro there in the 90s), I had the great fortune to play with the captain and a living legend Terry Long. This man, humble and quiet, is 86 years young. He still plays off a 10! And has broken his age 501 times!

Recently he was honoured with an award for this and I know the club has been in contact with the Guinness Book of Records.

    Back home here in Hermanus

I am glad to report that the weather was lovely and lots of golf was played.

On Wednesday the guys enjoyed an individual bogey plus and the victor of the day was Peter Cawdry on plus 7. Closely behind on plus 6 was Daan Dockel. Best nett was Peter Cawdry on 64 and best gross was Callie Bohlman with a one under par 71.

    · Saturday was again a nice golfing day and the format was a betterball medal. The winners of the day on nett 65 were Len Olivier and Chris Conroy. Runners-up were a whole gaggle of players, but winning the count out was Roy Smith and Dave Martheze on 66. Best nett was Roy Smith on 66 and best gross was Merson Arendse with 74.

    New book

To cap this week, congratulations to one of our members who has just released a book about improving your game. I found the titles of some of the chapters a little disturbing:

Chapter 1 - How to Properly Line Up Your Fourth Putt.

Chapter 2 - How to Hit a Nike from the Rough, When You Hit a Titleist from the Tee.

Chapter 3 - How to Avoid the Water When You Lie 8 in a Bunker.

Chapter 4 - How to Get More Distance off the Shank.

Chapter 5 - When to Give the Green Keeper the V sign.

With this great read I go off to choose a different career!
