    Calling all women to march against crime
    Lianda Beyers Cronjé

    A march for women by women of all races and creeds to protest against a common enemy - violence and crime, and particularly abuse against women.

    This is the form that the Overstrand's mayoress Marianné Beyleveldt's official Women's Day celebration on 9 August will take with the theme 'We will no longer be abused'.

    “The gender committee wants to involve all women across the whole spectrum of the Overstrand to unite against abuse and violence in all its facets and to show that we have had enough,” says Beyleveldt who has become known for her many hands-on care projects over the past years.

    Believing that women are strong enough to move mountains, Beyleveldt is convinced that a protest march will not only unify the Overstrand women but also make a stark statement of condemnation of the crime that is currently tearing the fabric of society apart.

    She said that schools across the Overstrand have been invited to participate in a poster competition to protest against abuse and violence and that these posters will be used during the peaceful march.

    Petitions will also be handed over to the police and the magistrate's court in Hermanus to voice women's concern about the increase in violence.

    Beyleveldt said that the idea of the march has been received very positively all over the Overstrand and that several men have already indicated that they will join in the proceedings. The police are also showing strong support for the march.

    “It is just not good enough to say that abuse and violence happen to other people - it affects us all and that is why we have to raise our voices and consolidate. The time is ripe,” stressed Beyleveldt.

    She is extending an open invitation to men to join the march to show their support to women.

    Marches are organised from two venues namely 08:30 from the Zwelihle sports grounds and 09:00 from the VG Church in Mt Pleasant, both to meet at the Mt Pleasant Primary School hall.

    There representatives from the police, magistrate's office and Cansa will talk to the women on relevant subjects.

    The highlight of the morning will be well-known motivation speaker Dr David Molapo's talk on “Keeping hope alive”.

    Afterwards, soup and bread will be served by the ladies from the Community Gospel Outreach, Mt Pleasant.

    Buses are being arranged to transport participants to the Zwelihle sports ground and the VG church. This will solve the problem of travelling and parking.

    Women in Hermanus who want to participate in the march are welcome to park at the municipal grounds and surrounds.

    The pick-up time and various bus stops are as follows:

    08:15 depart from Kleinmond municipal office to Mt Pleasant VG Church (contact person Wilna Hooneberg on 028-271 8100; 08:30 depart from Hawston library to Mt Pleasant (contact person Belinda May on 028-313 1402);

    07:30 depart from Gansbaai municipal office and will stop at Stanford municipal office at about 07:45 to Zwelihle sports grounds (contact person Moira Opperman on 072 480 2291);

    08:15 depart from Hermanus municipal office to Zwelihle sports grounds (contact person Elize Verrij or Desiree Arrison on 028-313 8058).

    The buses will collect the participants from the Mt Pleasant Primary School at about 12:30 and take them back to the places of departure.
