    Whale Festival wake-up call

The focus of this year's new-look Whale Festival will be on Hermanus and therefore Hermanus businesses have first choice to apply for the limited stalls at the festival market this year.

Far from jumping at the chance, very little response has been received from Hermanus businesses so far in spite of various advertisements in this regard, says Whale Festival chairperson Leon Theron.

Theron says the goal of the Whale Festival committee is to encourage visitors to visit the many fabulous restaurants and pubs in town and to browse through shops, art galleries and quirky arcades.

“We as festival committee have realised that the dynamics of Hermanus have changed. Whereas before the festival concentrated on providing as much entertainment as possible, we now accept that many establishments in town are sporting in-house entertainment,” he says. “Closer to the festival we will ask local establishments to send their in-house entertainment programmes to the festival committee in order to include these events in the Whale Festival programme.”

With regard to stalls, Theron says that they have been drastically reduced to focus on local South African crafts and clothes while the Food Emporium has been limited to ten stalls.

“We will have a small selection of preservatives and home-made produce but we would like to limit these to one or two stalls of a kind, for instance two biltong stalls or two stalls with home-made jams and chutneys.”

Theron says that the committee would like to urge local residents and business people to apply urgently at the festival office for stall space in order to ensure that Hermanus benefits from the festival.

“The festival committee will not accept applications for stalls from over the mountain until local business people have been given every chance possible to participate in the festival. However, the time is running out!”
