Max Leipold, director Hermanus Public Protection (HPP), PO Box 1599, Hermanus:
I refer to the article on the front page of the Hermanus Times of 20 June titled Patrol officers get angry.
Readers will undoubtedly be interested in the favourable outcome of this dispute.
Ever since the formation of the HPP in 2002, Overberg Safety Administration (Pty) Ltd (OSA) has attended to its security requirements. This successful partnership between ADT and Dykor continued until early this year when Mr Van Dyk, owner of Dykor, informed the OSA board that he no longer wished to continue his involvement in OSA.
As a result, in mid May, the partners in OSA formally gave notice to HPP that the provision of security services by OSA would be terminated on 31 July 2008.
In light of these events, the HPP had to find an alternative arrangement in terms of which it could continue discharging its responsibilities towards the community of Hermanus. This resulted in an understanding with ADT, the terms of which were contained in a public notice published in the Hermanus Times of 6 June.
The most salient point was that all existing OSA patrol officers and supervisors would be employed by ADT on terms and conditions no less favourable than those which they enjoyed in OSA.
Despite these guaranteed conditions of employment, the patrol officers expressed their reservations about joining the staff of ADT. This dispute was resolved without significant difficulty largely as a result of the positive attitudes displayed by most members of OSA staff.
By 11 July all patrol officers had accepted employment with ADT. It follows therefore that the move of the patrolling responsibility from OSA to ADT will be completed smoothly before the end of this month.
We are confident that the high level of service experienced by the residents of Hermanus will continue into the future.
We invite the public to alert HPP officers of any suspicious circumstance by calling its control centre.
The number - 028-312 4900 - remains the same after 31 July.
