    Not an island

    Judy Miller, Voëlklip, judym@whale.co.za:

I learned a valuable lesson these past few weeks. I had attended a personal development course three weeks ago, and had discovered the stark fact that what I carried around in my life was the belief that “I don't need anyone”, and was able to do it all myself, and that I could be quite insular.

So I made the declaration that I was open to the possibility of being surrendered, and that I would give up that belief.

Three days later, in the night, by mistake I put concentrated fruit acid drops into my eye instead of eye drops and burned off the cornea lining and some eye tissue.

The help and caring I received from optometrist Johan Pretorius and staff the next morning, was truly remarkable - he even opened his office the next day, Sunday, to check on my progress. He called friends of mine to come and collect me and they were wonderfully helpful in driving me home, collecting medication, doing shopping etc.

And just in case I hadn't quite got the lesson, a week later I fell hard on my slippery porch into a crate, playing with my dogs at home, and broke three ribs. Once again I called up a friend who took me to the hospital for X-rays and offered her services in any way I needed.

I am learning to be very surrendered to whatever happens in life, as now I cannot drive, work or get around much (as anyone who has had broken ribs can tell you!) I have reached out to friends like never before and been very touched by their kindness and willingness to help me. Thank you so much to all of you - you know who you are! I see that these “accidents” are in fact no accident, but a lesson to me, that we are not an island, and that we all need each other to share, grow and move forward.

So I am taming my big independent act and learning to reach out more.
