THE Education Department has met with principals of local schools again to discuss the number of pupils it would like to see the schools accommodate.
Gert Witbooi, spokesperson for the Western Cape Education Department, has confirmed that a meeting took place on 11 April.
According to two schools, it was agreed at the meeting that principals would not make statements to the press.
"These discussions are part of our ongoing attempts to address issues of overcrowding and the optimal use of space in the southern suburbs. Our capacity policy guideline of 35 to 38 learners per classroom still exist, and it remains a guideline," Witbooi said.
Among the proposals on the table are that the pupils from Fish Hoek Middle School could be incorporated into the primary and high schools, leaving an empty building that could be used as a technical school.
Also, Bay Primary has suggested moving its Kalk Bay campus to Fish Hoek, making the Kalk Bay campus available for St James Primary.
"Naturally we welcome the constructive participation of all the schools involved, and will consider all inputs before arriving at a particular decision. We also do not want to put a deadline to the discussions, so as not to put the procedure under unnecessary strain," Witbooi said.
Witbooi would not comment on whether numbers given to schools earlier still stood, or whether they had been changed.
Several principals previously said schools could not possibly accommodate the number of pupils that the department had proposed.
