THE police are investigating the possibility that the alleged armed robbery that took place at a Lotus River home last week could actually have been a firearm deal in progress.
A home owner in Third Avenue killed a man and wounded another in an incident that until now has been described by police as an armed robbery.
According to Constable Siphokazi Mawisa, provincial police spokesperson, Aldred Tissong and his wife were at their house in Third Avenue, Lotus River when two men entered on Friday, 11 May at 09:45.
Tissong's wife had opened the door.
"The men allegedly attempted to rob the couple at gunpoint.
"A struggle ensued, after which Tissong gained possession of the firearm," Constable Mawisa says in a statement.
She adds that Tissong fired a number of shots at the two men and one of the alleged armed robbers, a 35-year-old man, was hit in the face.
He died on the scene. His 37-year-old friend sustained a bullet wound to the buttocks and was taken to a nearby hospital, where his condition is stable, according to Constable Mawisa.
It was later discovered that the firearm used was Tissong's own licensed firearm, which had been stolen from him in December.
The body of the deceased was found on Tissong?s couch and the vehicle used by the suspec?ted armed robbers was parked outside Tissong's home.
The car was towed away and is to be dus?ted for fingerprints.
A docket of attempted armed robbery was registered by Tissong and a docket of murder and attempted murder was registered against him.
According to a source who spoke to People's Post in confidence, the police are investigating the possibility that a firearm deal could have been in progress at the time.
But the Grassy Park Police could not confirm this.
"We cannot speculate because the investigation is still going on," Inspector Stephen Knapp, communication officer for the station, says.
Tissong appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court on Monday.
Inspector Knapp did not know the outcome of the court hea?ring.
Philip Bam, chairperson of the Community Police Forum of Grassy Park, says that at this point it is difficult to comment on the case, but says that if it was an act of self-defence, people do have the right to defend themselves.
However, Bam says that he hopes the investigation will reveal more of the details surrounding the incident.
Anyone with information relating to the incident can phone the Grassy Park Police Station on (021) 700-3900.
