    Bounty in Camps Bay robbery
    Tammy Petersen

A NIGERIAN family robbed at a rented house in Camps Bay have offered a R120 000 reward for the return of jewellery, passports and other valuables stolen in the early hours of Friday, 28 March.

The married couple, their three children and a nanny were held up by three men brandishing knives, who had gained entry into the room through an open patio door.

Captain Lana Poolman from the Camps Bay Police Station says the robbers threatened to hurt one of the children if the nanny did not take them to the bedroom of "the boss".

"The man of the house woke up during the commotion and the robbers shone a torch in his eyes so that he would not be able to identify them at a later stage. They then stole all the valuables in the room and left the premises."

She adds that the nanny recognised one of the robbers as he had helped the family move to the Camps Bay house prior to the incident.

Poolman says the man was questioned but refused to acknowledge guilt or to provide any information on his accomplices' whereabouts. She says a lack of fingerprints at the scene is further retarding the investigation.

He appeared in court late yesterday afternoon on a charge of housebreaking. The A4-sized advertisement offering the reward appeared in a weekend publication on Saturday with a picture of one of the stolen items (a rose gold Audemars Piguet watch valued at an estimated R70 200), details on the other missing goods, and a contact number.

When People's Post phoned the supplied number, a woman named Sonja said she had been mandated by the Nigerian couple, who have since returned home, to respond to all calls made to the cellphone.

She says the family were in the country to "consult with potential property investors" but refused to elaborate on the issue.

"All I can tell you is they have decided not to do it here any more after what happened."

Initially, Sonja was very forthcoming with details of the robbery, but when People's Post later phoned her, she refused to comment further. Camps Bay Community Police Forum chairperson Bernard Schäfer says he will be meeting with the police during the week to discuss the incident and devise further safety and crime prevention measures.
