    Garth VD Merwe hits century
    Derek Harvey

GARTH VAN DER MERWE was the star for the locals over a weekend during which rain played a part in all the matches.

The 1st XI have only a 20/20 knockout style competition to look forward to in a season that has proved farcical. A botched attempt to restructure the league saw the 1st XI finish their league games in January and their one-day fixtures and a 20/20 tournament end in February.

This has resulted in the depressing sight of the top cricketers in the club forlornly roaming the clubhouse in search of any kind of entertainment.

Fortunately, entertainment was provi-ded by the other teams, with the Thirds comically spilling 12 catches to allow Ottomans to reach 286/8 in a 45-over limited over game.

Fish Hoek were well on their way to reach this total and were at 116/2 when rain stopped play, Brian Norbury (28no), Sean Maidwell (38) and Richard Sills (21no) all making victory within reach.

The Fourths went on a run rampage, scoring 243/3 in 38 overs to beat Peninsula by 167 runs. Garth van der Merwe led the way with a superb 100 no and was assisted by Craig Miller (67) and Eddie Heath, following his 69 last week, scoring 45no. Heath then took 3-19 and Helsby 2-19 to give them victory.

The 2nd XI were beaten by United after losing the toss and being sent in on a wet wicket. They were all out for 88 and lost by 8 wickets in this one-day fixture.
