THE 41st edition of the SA Surfing Championships took place on the Atlantic beaches of the South Peninsula from Thursday to Sunday. Once again Western Province proved invincible in their home surf, maintaining their record of never having lost the team event in Cape Town since the event started in 1966.
Sponsored by global surf brand Quiksilver for the 11th year, and presented by Peugeot and Samsung, the event started in small waves and classic autumn weather at Long Beach in Kommetjie before being moving to the Ledge near Slangkop lighthouse on the first day. There the men's open and u/20 competitors in eight provincial teams enjoyed very good glassy one metre south swell waves peeling down the rocky, kelp-strewn point.
Two more days at Long Beach sorted the finalists from the rest and the last day was held at the Hoek, below Chapman's Peak on Noordhoek beach, which produced some great head-high barrels in a pumping south-easter gale. The open title went to WP top seed Quintin Jones, while the top performance from a Deep South local came from Kommetjie's Josh Salie, who finished runner-up to Keegan Nel (Border) in the u/20 boys' division and was also named the junior surfer of the event.
Other locals to feature were Sarah Nicholson (Kommetjie), who qualified for the final in the u/20 girls' division, finishing fourth overall, and Tarryn Chudleigh (Scarborough), who went on to win the inaugural Plate event in the same division after being eliminated from the main event in the first round.
Significant contributions to WP's winning team total also came from Kommetjie's Adam Hansen, who reached the semi-finals of the open men before being ousted, as did Brandon Roberts (Sun Valley) and Brett Shearer (Kommetjie) in the u/20 boys' division.
. This week sees the second Surfing South Africa Level 1 Surf Instructor's course of the year being conducted at the Kahuna Surfing Academy in Kommetjie by Dene Botha, currently the country's only accredited surf coaching trainer / assessor. Participants on the latest course include Josh Salie, Kommetjie big-wave legend Andrew Marr, surfer-musician Nate Maingard (Scarborough), and Chill & Surf Backpacker?s Pierre Joubert.
