SAFA-CAPE TOWN'S most lucrative competition is heading for an anti-climax following the exclusion of clubs from two of its biggest affiliates from the final knockout phase.
This unfolded when the R400 000 Red Heart Rum Challenge Cup's last 16 round matches took place at the Bishop Lavis sports complex on Sunday.
The fate that befell Safa-Cape Town's bigger associations, namely the Cape Town-Tygerberg FA and Cape District FA, was nevertheless self-inflicted as neither association had fully complied with the competition rules.
Neither association had registered their clubs at Local Football Association (LFA) level as required to take part in the cup competition, which carries R100 000 in prize money for the champion club.
The losing finalist will receive R50 000 in this inaugural competition.
The decision to exclude the CT-Tygerberg FA and CDFA was taken at a Safa-Cape Town representative council mee?ting last week. Bennett Bailey, the chairperson of Safa-Cape Town, said his association was unfortunately left with no alternative but to go ahead without these associations? representatives.
The CT-Tygerberg did not engage in elimination round matches, while the CDFA eliminations were not completed.
According to the rules, the two fina?lists of the bigger associations would enter the final knockout phase, while the winner progressed from the smaller LFAs.
The CDFA virtually ruled its top clubs, like Greenwood Athletic, Hotspurs-Milano, Blue Bells and Stephanian, out of the championship when it stopped all its clubs from affiliating to the Greater Wynberg LFA, which is currently run by the Southern Suburbs FA.
The Hotspurs-Milano club that sought affiliation of the GWLFA was suspen?ded.
The suspension was subsequently lif?ted and the club has to appear before the CDFA disciplinary committee.
