    Another African gold for Yolande

DARTS ace Yolande van Rooyen's penchant for gold served as the ideal motivation when she won the open singles title at the 2006 Africa Zone 6 championship in Blantyre, Malawi.

But it was a case of you win one and lose one at the event for the renowned member of the Avondale Club, which plays out of the Southern Suburbs Darts Union in Retreat.

Van Rooyen (37), who is South Africa's top ranked women's competitor, beat her Zambian opponent in the open final at the second consecutive Zone 6 championship at which she has represented her country.

In 2005, the Mitchell's Plain mother-of-three won the closed singles title at the continental event in Swaziland.

"I was a little disappointed after my elimination in the closed singles. It would have been great to retain the title."

"But the result could have gone either way. I did not allow the defeat to unsettle me, though," said Van Rooyen, who lost 3-2 to her fellow-SA player, Annette Pretorius 3-2 in the semi-final round.

Van Rooyen's determination to do well shone through when she defeated another SA player, Estie Stoltz, 3-1 in the semis of the open competition.

Van Rooyen's latest achievement has earned her a place in an elite group of SA darts stars, who have notched two gold me?dals in the top African competition since this country's return to international sport in 1991.

Her next target? "Definitely to win the Western Province Champion of Champions title at the championship in October. This is one event that I have not yet won," she enthuses.
