FALCONS-SAP and Westridge Yankees softballers will renew their keen rivalry for honours at the Cape Town Classic tournament at Turfhall Stadium in Crawford this weekend, Friday, 6 until Sunday, 8 October.
The pre-season competition will again be staged by the Tantasport Softball Club, which has received funding for the venture for the third consecutive year from the City of Cape Town' sports department.
The clubs have dominated the Super League for several years, with Yankees annexing the league title and Falcons triumphing in the knockout final last season. Yankees were champions on two occasions in the Classic before Falcons went on to win the 2005 final.
SA pitcher Nicki Jones, SA outfielder Lindsay Verkuiel and Jo-Anne Philander will again form the nucleus of the defending champions' side.
Yankees' SA kingpin Bronwyn Marshall is unavailable and Almarie Kannemeyer and Megan Cable will share the pitching, with Chameez Parker and Glynis Koopman providing invaluable experience in the infield.
Tantasport have, meanwhile, appointed Hilton Thomas (ex-St Martin's) as head coach. Bonita Cloete, Megan Cloete and Sharnelle Solomons will be his key players.
The top team will receive R1 000; the losing finalists R600 and third placed R400 in each group (gold, silver and bronze).
The Classic starts with Tantasport v Battswood (20:00) and Blackheath v Glenthorn (19:00) on Friday night. The two lower group finals (15:00) and gold group final (16:30) will take place on Sunday.
Groups: Gold (Super League): Falcons, Westridge, Glenthorn, Tantasport, Ridgeville, Battswood and Strandfontein.
Silver (Major and First Division): Glenthorn, VOB, Battswood B&S, Bothasig, Blackheath and Albertons.
Bronze (Second and Third Division): Avendale, Kenfac, Phillies, N&A Academy, Old Mutual Cubs, Bothasig and Crusaders.
