    Navies go head-to-head on rugby field


    THE South African Navy will, for the first time in its history, host the third Commonwealth Navies Rugby tournament in Glencairn. The tournament starts today and will end on Friday, 13 October.

    The competing teams include the South African Navy, the Royal Navy, Royal Australian Navy and the Royal New Zealand Navy.

    The tournament started nine years ago and it has been gradually gaining momentum among the competitors. It takes place every three years.

    The South African Navy attended the tournament in 2003 as an observer and was later requested to host the tournament in 2006.

    The Royal Navy team has won all three tournaments over the past nine years.

    The first game of the 2006 tournament will take place at the South African Navy Field, Glencairn Sports Grounds, on Tuesday 3 October at 13:30.

    The programme is: . 3 October: 13:30 SAN vs RNZN; RN vs RAN, Glencairn Sportsgrounds;

    . 6 October: 13:30: SAN vs RAN, RN vs RNZN, Glencairn Sportsgrounds;

    . 10 October: 13:30 RAN vs RNZN, SAN vs RN, Glencairn Sportsgrounds; and

    . 13 October: 15:30 Navy Barbarians vs False Bay Rugby Club, False Bay Rugby Club in Constantia.
