    Gloomy days for city clubs
    brian gaffney

IT was a black weekend for Ajax-Cape Town and Santos in the Premier Soccer League, while Vasca Da Gama suffered another embarrassing defeat in the Mvela Golden League.

The 4-0 away defeat of Santos against struggling Benoni Premier United and Ajax's 2-1 setback on Green Point on Saturday night have rocked both clubs, who have thus far produced little to suggest that they could keep clear of the relegation zone this season.

Vasco Da Gama were equally disappointing in a 5-1 away defeat against Free State Stars.

Roger da Sa, the Santos coach, said that two early goals by Premier, including a penalty, unsettled his side.

"They scored the other goals when we threw players forward in a bid to at least salvage a point," he lamented. Santos were also trounced 5-2 by Silver Stars in Gauteng a fortnight ago.

Alarmingly, the poor showing of Santos and Ajax raises fears that the PSL could develop into an inland powerhouse in the event of either club being relegated.

In recent years, the relegation of some top pro clubs from KwaZulu-Natal and more recently the fall of Bush Bucks from the Eastern Cape have hit the game along the coast.

Meanwhile, Colin Gie, the owner of Cape United, has confirmed that he will not keep his newly-acquired Mvela franchise of Bush Bucks in the Eas?tern Cape, but that his club will be based at the Wynberg Military Sportsfield. Cape United's first home match is scheduled for Wednesday, 25 October.

Gie said that he is negotiating with Battswood FC to take over the club's Vodacom franchise this week.
