ST AUGUSTINE big-hitter Wesley Euley was in a mean mood in the opening round of Western Province 1B League matches at the weekend.
Left-hander Euley's swashbuckling knock of 89 gave St Augustine (204/4 after 33 overs) in a commanding position against Edgemead (197 all out) at the Saints' headquarters at Elfindale.
Euley, who turns 27 today, scored 66 runs through boundaries. While five of his hits cleared the picket fence for sixes, he kept the momentum going with nine fours.
This was not Euley's first big knock for the Saints in recent weeks. A fortnight ago he scored 119 runs off 46 deliveries against Almar in a pre-season 20-over tourney.
Euley's early season form could keep him in the reckoning for a provincial call-up.
The Saints kingpin, has turned out regularly for the WP B side in recent years, after a one-season spell with Paarl in the old Boland Union in 2004.
That was the only time since age 10 that Euley had left the Saints.
Shaun Davids, who opened the inning with Euley scored 43 and Andile Qomazi was on 27 not out at the close.
Davids' hits twice cleared the boundary for sixes, while he went on to smash four further boundaries.
All the Saints' bowlers were in good nick as they went on to dismiss the visitors in 33 overs.
Paceman Jude Erentzen claimed 3/43, while Qomayi 2/24, Evan Jacobs 2/43 and Duncan Whatney 2/26 also chipped in to take vital wickets.
Charles Jooste top scored with 51 for Edgemead, who face a back-to-the-wall fight when the two-day match resumes this Saturday.
Meanwhile, in 1A League action, UWC (221/8 declared) hold the upperhand against Tygerberg (137/6).
UWC's opening bowler Phillip du Plessis scored a brisk 60 runs that included nine boundaries.
Clinton Bradshaw (34 not out) and Justin Botha (25) also played with confidence on their home turf, despite some consistent bowling by Denver Carolus (3/56)
Tygers' Brendon Johnson scored an undefeated 62 to steady his side's knock, after they were battling at 57/3.
Johnson hit eight fours and took 87 minutes to reach his half-ton.
At Plumstead, Dominique Telo scored a fine century (127) to steer Cape Town to 225/6 against Durbanville (112/5).
Telo's knock included 13 boundaries and two sixes.
Cape Town's Clive Gie claimed 2/24 in 12 overs to keep pressure on the visitors, with his medium-pace deliveries.
The other players to record centuries in the 1A League competition were WPCC's Darren Bassage and UCT's John Geoghagen.
Bassage's 110 runs allowed WPCC to declare at 229/8 against Bellville (85/6).
Geoghagen's was in a more aggressive mood against Almar (100/7). He scored his 107 off 89 balls, with 14 boundaries and three sixes.
