THE youthful Glenthorn softball side have sent out a clear warning to the perennial big guns Falcons-SAP and Westridge Yankees . . .
It said: Watch out - Your days are numbered!
In 90 exciting minutes of adventurous softball Glenthorn got their point across when they defeated defending champions Falcons-SAPS 3-1 in the final of the annual Cape Town Classic Championship at the Turfhall Stadium in Crawford on Sunday.
Glenthorn achieved its first major success at Super League level thanks mostly to the fine contributions of pitcher Codlyn Korasie, new recruit Jade Daniels who hit a two-run homer and the fine all-round play of Carla Swanepoel.
Korasie only conceded three hits that included a three-bagger by Petina Phillips while allowing one intentional walk.
The walk she surrendered to big-hitting Nicki Jones, with two down and Kim Nicholson threatening to score from third base, put pressure on the next batter Nicki Lancaster in the fourth inning.
The ploy worked when Lancaster's hit was gloved by SA infielder van Kesteren, whose experience and temperament has been of immense help to her younger charges over the past two seasons.
Falcons' other safe hits were recorded by Nicholson and Candice Stevens. But there was no further joy for them as outfielder Swanepoel ran several metres to glove two difficult catches including a match-winning catch deep in the right-field area.
Swanepoel and van Kesteren both batted 2-3 and Daniels (ex-Old Mutual Cubs) 2-2, including a two-run homer, as Falcons pitcher Nicky Jones conceded seven hits.
Falcons' sister combination Celeste Marks and Petina Phillips shared the only double play when they cut short Van Kesteren's advances to third base, after her two-bagger.
But in the end the Glenthorn side coached by Andre Alexander were more imaginative, pacier and focused than their opponents, who risked playing the injured SA player Lindsay Verkuiel in the outfield.
The CTC championship favourites Westridge Yankees disappointed when they were denied a place in the final, after losing 6-4 to Strandfontein Mets.
Mets will debut in the Super League this season after winning promotion.
Yankees, who have won more silverware than any other club in the WPSF, also disappointed when none of their players or coaches were present to receive the trophy for finishing third at the awards ceremony of the CTC hosted by the Tantasport club.
In other CTC action, Glenthorn completed a double when their second team beat Bothasig Badgers 16-8 in the Silver section final, while Old Mutual Cubs beat Kenfac Phillies 9-4 in the Bronze section final.
The winners of the best batter awards were: Gold section - Lynn Lekay (Westridge Yankees): Silver section - Glynnis Simpson (Battsswood B&S); Bronze section - Bronwyn Trout (Avendale).
