WHAT expectedly turned out to be an ideal seamers wicket leaves either Victoria or Cape Town in with a chance to snatch an outright win when their Western Province 1A League match resumes at Kenwyn on Saturday.
Victoria, the defending league champions, took first advantage of the conditions, thanks to the sterling efforts of paceman Egon Rushin.
Rushin claimed 5/29 in 17,3 overs to help dismiss the visitors for 114 in their first innings. But Cape Town's seamer Richard Lotter (3/30) also prospered by restricting Victoria to 113/6 at the close on Saturday, 21 October.
Cheslyn Lodewyk (2/14) and Riaz Teladia (2/21), the son of ex-Victoria quickie Ismail Teladia, rendered valuable support for Rushin in the champions' opening league match.
Cape Town?s middle-order batsman Rory O'Brien (28) and Damien Thornton (21), relieved pressure on their team, who were struggling at 78/5.
Victoria were in trouble too, at 50/3 before Ashley Wallace (28), Warren Wyngard (23), Rory Kleinveldt (18) and Marc de Stadler (20 not out) made useful contributions with the bat.
Wallace hit four boundaries while Wyngard slammed three fours.
An early declaration by Victoria this coming Saturday, could give their pacemen another chance to exploit the conditions.
Not forgetting that Kleinveldt and De Stadler a raring to go. Kleinveldt arrived back after lunch at Kenwyn, after turning out for the Cape Cobras in their rained-offf clash with the Highveld Lions in Johannesburg on Friday and has not bowled in the match.
De Stadler, the WP's best amateur bowler last season, will be out to redeem himself after a 1/48 wicket-haul in 22 overs on the opening day at Kenwyn.
