FALSE BAY surfers dominated the results in the first Kahuna Surf Series contest completed in small onshore waves at Muizenberg Corner last weekend.
More than eighty novice surfers entered, and Grant Arendse from Strandfontein clinched the premier u/16 boys division to win a pile of major surfwear brand prizes.
Glencairn's Sabrina Scott was elated to earn her first contest victory in the u/14 girls division, while Constance Haas from Plumstead was crowned u/12 girls champ thanks to the training she does at the Muizenberg Corner based Surf Shack.
The boys triumphed in the mixed u/10 section where Jordan Maree (Tokai) won from Daniel Duval (Observatory), with Kommetjie's Jonah Paarman in third place. The u/12 boys produced an all False Bay final with Dominic Notten, his brother Nicholas and fellow St James local Ollie Morris split by Muizenberg's Benjamin de Castro, who grabbed second place.
It was only in the u/14 boys' competition, where Leon du Preez (Melkbos) defeated a trio of Muizenberg surf rats in Papi Makonyane, Elroy Thomas and Sam Moore, and the u/16 girls? that saw Hout Bay?s Kirsten Kingma beat Anna Notten, Alex Morris and defending u/16 champ Ashleigh Hart (Kirstenhof), that the locals did not secure the titles.
The KSS is intended to motivate youngsters and let them experience the joys of winning by excluding those surfers who have previously featured in the final of a national surfing event. The concept has been eagerly grasped by a number of the major surf and sportswear brands with Dave van Ginkel of DVG Surfboards the latest to come on board.
The best performer in the KSS after the third event in Kommetjie in December will be awarded a DVG Surfboard custom built for the winner by the Kommetjie based manufacturer who supplies surfboards to many of the Peninsula's top performers, including many of the hardcore big wave chargers.
The second KSS event is scheduled for Melkbosstrand on the weekend of 4 and 5 November. More details are available at www.kahunasurf.co.za where the entry form can be downloaded.
? Kommetjie's Dave Richards became a celebrity while competing in the Canary Islands, last weekend, when he celebrated his 20th birthday by defeating a quartet of WCT and highly ranked WQS surfers to advance from the round of 96 to the last 32 of a four star rated, R500 000 event in double overhead waves on Lanzarote.
The unassuming full-time pro surfer ended the highest placed SA competitor, taking 17th overall and earning R7 000 and 600 invaluable ratings points that moved him into 173rd place on the rankings, closer to the magic 150th position that will virtually guarantee him a start in every WQS event in 2007. Dave is off to compete in Hawaii next and returns early in December.
While still awaiting confirmation of the claim for the Guinness World Record for the most surfers riding a single wave at Muizenberg Corner last month, the Kahuna Surfing Academy's Dene Botha has handed over a cheque for R10 068 of funds raised during the event and accompanying Shark Debate to Yvonne Kamp and Patrick 'Rasta' Davids of the Shark Spotters Programme.
