All the Fish Hoek Cricket Club sides got off to a good start in their opening matches of the season but some batting collapses in the middle order saw the 1st and 2nd sides both fighting for draws in matches they should have won.
The 1st XI, (away from home), restricted St Augustines to 163 due to some fine bowling in a team effort.
Fish Hoek recovered from 4/2 to end up on 208, giving them a lead of 45.
Derek Pedersen and skipper Mark de Beer played outstanding cricket to rectify matters in a big partnership. De Beer scored 87, Pedersen 62 and Neil Maclellan (48). Chasing a second innings target of 209, Fish Hoek played out a draw which saw them at 136/9 at close.
The 2nds bowled out Green Point for 110, with Steven Brandt and Jason Lowry getting the breakthrough.
Lowry ended with 7/23 in 21 overs and scored 29 runs to cap an outstanding performance.
Fish Hoek replied with 141. Matt Lever top scored with 38 and was assisted by Rob Page (35) and Lowry. Set a target of 196, Fish Hoek ended 30 runs short on 166/7.
Graham Conway scored a fine 50 and Matt Lever 36. Andy Williams bowled extremely well for his 4/28 but was let down by the side dropping too many catches.
Both sides could have easily come away with maximum points from these games.
The 3rd XI had a good 2 days. Although only scoring 135 (Mark Wynne 25, Don Helsby 19) they ended up in a winning position thanks to fine bowling from Craig Miller who took 6/9 in 9 overs and Mike Visser 3/17 rolling Nthns/Goodwood for 31 and 74 (Visser and Linde both 2/17) in the second innings, giving the home side victory by an innings and 30 runs.
Skipper Edwin Heath and Quinton Schoeman were outstanding in the 4ths victory over Avondale. Schoeman took 6/34 and Mundel 2/5 to have the Avondale at 161/9.
Heath then smashed a fine 102no (11 x 4s, 5 x 6s) and helped by Ian Smedley (31) they reached the target in just 27 overs.
An excellent start that bodes well for the new season ahead!
