Yankees' ballers in no mood to be upstaged
    brian gaffney

THE credentials of title-aspirants Glenthorn will come under severe scrutiny when they face defending champions Westridge Yankees in a top-of-the-log softball clash at Turfhall Stadium in Crawford on Saturday, 4 November.

Both clubs enter this showdown with unbeaten records after rarely being put to the test by their opponents, while each notched three consecutive shut-outs in the Super League competition this season.

The consistency of Yankees pitcher, Almarie Kannemeyer, and her Glenthorn counterpart, Codlyn Korasie, have characterised their clubs' convincing wins.

And, notably, the rival pitchers have thus far accounted for the six shut-outs recorded in the 10 league matches that were played.

The allround contributions of SA player Astrid van Kesteren, Carla Swanepoel, Candice Ross and Nicky Fortune have kept alive Glenthorn's adventurous approach to the game.

At times there are glimpses of adventurism in the Glenthorn game plan that have made the all-conquering Yankees the biggest crowd-pullers in softball. How well Yankees' stalwarts Chameez Parker, Lynn Alexander and Glynnis Koopman, who have all featured prominently during the club's hey-day, deal with the Glenthorn threat could determine the course of Saturday's clash.

The Yankees trio could be driven by the thought that no other club should be allowed to upstage them when it comes to mixing the solid hits and bunts, nifty yet risky base stealing and cunning.

Nor should anyone be compared with their former contemporaries like national players Natasha Porthen, Janine Johnson, Natasha Swartz and Roxanne Fife, who made Yankees tick.

Big match temperament and experience could also count in Yankees' favour.

But Glenthorn could surprise by calling on stalwart Debbie Mulder to warm the bench as a back-up pitcher if Korasie gets knocked out of her stride. Or, Mulder could enter the game to wield her big bat when runs are needed.
