Weekend cricket bogged down by rain

THE Western Province CC and Cape Town secured the only outright wins in the WP 1A League competition that was hard-hit by rain at the weekend.

While the WPCC recorded a 111-run win over Victoria at Avenue de Mist in Rondebosch, Cape Town beat Almar by 100 runs at Plumstead, after the inclement weather prompted the victors to declare their first innings closed at 0/0 in their bids to secure wins.

The WPCC's Stephen George (43), Ryan Ten Doeschate (40) steered their side to 229/9 declared in the second innings. Victoria' Earl Hendricks claimed 3/60.

Victoria's Miles Williamson (44) hit three sixes in one over, but the innings collapsed as Ten Doesschate claimed 3/23 and Neil Quayle 3/45 to dismiss the visitors for 118. The bats of Mark Ritchie (60) and Damien Thornton (53 not out) helped Cape Town to a useful 236/6 declared.

Almar were dismissed for 136 thanks to the economical bowling of Donovan Holman (5/63). Almar's Craig le Riche scored 36.

The clash between Claremont (212/8 declared and 46/2) and United (198/8) ended in a draw at Constantia, where the homeside's Geoff Love claimed 5/55.

United's Abdullah Osman scored an undefeated 45, Munier Holmes (35), while captain Faiek Davids (38) steadied the innings.

Former WP allrounder David has joined United, after a stint with Hanover Park CC.

The clash between UCT (253/6 declared) had Montrose (190/9 declared) was also drawn.

In the other drawn matches, UWC's Craig Williams (84), Primrose's Saliem Toefy (61), Tygerberg' Clint du Preez (86 not out) and Montrose?s new acquisition Ryan Maron (64) enjoyed big knocks.

    Other scores:

Pinelands (215/4 dec and 110/7 dec) drew with Durbanville (137/8 dec).

UWC (133/9 dec and 207/7 dec) drew with Primrose 147 and 155/9)
