    brian gaffney

THE Ottomans Cricket Club is batting steadily towards its 125th anniversary celebration next year.

Two major activities that form part of the build up to the anniversary is the expansion of the club?s youth cricket programme and a tour by the Malaysian senior and youth teams in December.

The junior programme received a boost when Mark Khoabane, a WP Cricket Association youth coach, was last week appointed to guide the mini-cricket, under-10, under-13, under-15 and under-17 teams.

Maliek Latief, the club secretary, said the acquisition of Khoabane augurs well for the growth and success of the youth programme.

He said the tour by the Malaysian senior and youth (under-14 and under-19) teams is part of many goodwill tour exchanges between Ottomans and the Asian country over the last seven years.

The matches will take place at the Hassan Howa Oval in Surrey Estate and Newlands cricket stadium.

Ottomans which was founded in the Bo-Kaap in 1882 and is one of the oldest cricket clubs in South Africa.

The membership of the club that now has its headquarters at the Hassan Howa Oval hail from the City Bowl, Athlone, Mitchell's Plain and Southern Suburbs. Anyone keen to be part of the club's activities may call Latief on 082 823 5468 or on 692-0067 (work).
