THE move of South African softballer Lynn Lekay to Johannesburg did little to affect Westridge Yankees' effort to secure two vital wins in the WP Super League competition at the weekend.
Yankees defeated Old Mutual Cubs 11-4 on Sunday and hitherto unbeaten Glenthorn 7-0 on Saturday to keep alive their hopes of retaining the league title.
But Lekay, one of the best utility players in club softball, will not be entirely lost to Yankees this season.
Wajoodien Parker, the Yankees' club manager, said that Lekay is set to return home for important matches, including the decisive final first round clash with Falcons-SAPS on Saturday, 18 November.
While Yankees are unbeaten after five matches, Falcons are a point adrift of the pacesetters after drawing 3-3 with Old Mutual Cubs a fortnight ago.
Lekay is also likely to be back when Yankees take part in the national club championships in December.
On Sunday, Yankees rocked Cubs when they scored nine runs in the first inning of their league clash at Turfhall Park in Crawford. Glynnis Koopman, batting 2-2, hit a three-bagger, while Charmel Whiteboy, 2-2, and Chameez Parker, 2-3, were in good nick, too.
Lindi Erasmus conceded five walks before swopping positions with catcher Lynn Conning in an agonising first inning for Cubs. Conning gave away eight hits and five walks.
Yankees' teenage pitcher Megan Cable fanned three batters and allowed five hits and a walk in her first pitching spell in ther top league for the season.
Tracy Weeder, Shannon Nicholson and Wendy Petersen each batted 1-2, but Yankees found no need to bring on their No 1 pitcher Almarie Kannemeyer, who has four consecutive shut-outs under her belt.
At City Park in Athlone, Glenthorn also rested their SA infielder Astrid van Kesteren when they beat Battswood 10-3 on Sunday.
Glenthorn's Codlyn Korasie conceded six hits and a walk, while her counterpart Lorraine Primo fanned three batters and allowed nine hits.
Candice Ross batted 2-5 and Korasie hit a three-run homer for the victors.
Strandfontein Mets, meanwhile, edged Ridgeville 4-3 on Sunday, thanks to the steady batting of Claudia Coetzee.
She batted 2-3 and accounted for two invaluable RBIs off the pitching of Kim Veroni, who allowed two hits and four walks. Her relief Terri Minnies gave away three walks and a hit.
Ridgeville's Melanie Wagner, Rhonda Minnies, Bonita Playton and Marcelle Green shared four hits off Janine van Rooi, who also played a key role in Mets? 12-0 win over Tanta on Saturday.
Coetzee, batting 4-4, was equally prominent in the win over Tanta when her hits accounted for five RBIs.
Falcons beat Tanta 3-0 in the other Super League match played on Sunday.
