Deep South surfers take top prizes
    PAUL BOTHA

DEEP SOUTH surfers dominated the awards at the prize-giving for the 2006 WP Surfing Championships last week, filling the finals in every division and clinching the gold medals in all but a handful.

Tarryn Chudleigh deservedly won the Surfer of the Year accolade after a year of excellent performances locally, nationally and internationally, while fellow national junior team member Matthew Bromley stunned the WP surfing fraternity by winning the both the Men's Open division and the u/16 boys category - the first time a 15-year-old has captured the open title.

Other local gold medallists included Jonah Paarman (u/10), Max Armstrong (u/12), Michael February (u/14), Tanika Hoffman (U/14 girls), Tarryn Chudleigh (u/16 girls), Danielle Johnson (u/18 girls), Nic Molde (u/18), Brett Shearer (u/20), Sarah Nicholson (u/20 girls), Garth Pearson (Masters) and Mark Hoyle (Veterans).

WP Surfing president Mark Hoffman was awarded the Basil Lomberg Trophy and Ronnie Veldhuis the Friendship Cup for their sterling efforts on behalf of surfing, while Fish Hoek Senior High School won both the boys and girls' trophies in the WP Inter-schools Championships.

And local girls continued their winning ways on the national stage on the weekend when Tarryn Chudleigh (u/16) and fellow Kommetjie surferette Holly Armstrong (u/14) won their respective divisions in the Roxy Wahine Cup in Durban, touted as the biggest stand-alone women's surfing event in the country.

This weekend it's the novices' turn to step into the spotlight when the third and final Kahuna Surf Series event is run and the 2006 series champions crowned in Kommetjie. After events at Muizenberg in October and Melkbosstrand in November, Grant Arendse (Strandfontein) is amongst a group of four in contention for the u/16 boys' crown, while Anna Notten (St James) and Sabrina Scott (Glencairn) are neck and neck for both the u/16 and u/14 girls titles.

Muizenberg locals Papi Makonyane and Elroy Thomas occupy top four spots in the u/14 boys' ratings. The u/12 standings are headed by Benjamin de Castro (Muizenberg) and the St James-based trio of Oli Morris and the Notten brothers ? Dominic and Nicholas. Jonah Paarman (Kommetjie) is currently third in the u/10's.

The KSS is designed to motivate and foster novices entering surfing events, giving the newcomers the opportunity to experience the joy of becoming winners by excluding surfers who have previously qualified for the finals of a national event. Generously supported by a host of the country's top surf and youth brands, the event and series champions receive thousands of Rands worth of valuable products including Reef wetsuits, a DVG surfboard, Von Zipper eyewear, Freestyle watches, Kustom footwear, and products from Island Style accessories, Cobian sandals, Palmers wax, Zigzag surfing magazine, Lifestyle surf shop, Puma sports and Atlantic Surf.

Sanctioned by WP Surfing, who also provide the contest infrastructure, the series champions in the seven divisions from u/10 to u/16 girls and boys are also awarded a three-day intensive high performance surf camp at the Kommetjie based Kahuna Surfing Academy.
