IT was a matter of touch and go for the Trafalgar High School in District Six, whose boys side will defend the World High School Touch Rugby champions title in Singapore this week.
The historically-rich school that was established in 1912 has been the alma mata of several leading professional people and top sports persons across the Peninsula.
Trafalgar's champion boys touch rugby team will be in action in Singapore from Friday, 8 December, until Sunday, 10 December. Nadeem Hendricks, the principal of Trafalgar, said there were fears that his school would be unable to defend the title they won in 2005 because of a lack of funds to cover tour costs.
A generous sponsorship from the JAG Investment Group, however, brought the smiles back to the faces of the learners, who headed for the Asian country last Friday.
Trafalgar will for the first time field a girls team at the Touch Rugby championship.
"We are extremely grateful to the sponsor and to Ebrahim Rassool, the Premier of the Western Cape, for their support," Hendricks added. "Travel and interacting with learners from other countries plays an important part in the development of young minds. Sport provides a way for the players to share stories, become goal-orientated and be able to realise they are able to achieve success if they work hard and are motivated," said Hendricks at the farewell function.
Greg James, the CEO of JAG, said: "It is important for us to be able facilitate opportunities for young South Africans to enrich their experiences through sport.
"We are delighted to be able to assist in sending the reigning touch rugby champions and the first Trafs' girls team to Singapore," James said.
