Zola tears up the mountain side
    Jason Acar

THEMBELANI ZOLA, from Mr Price Western Province, tore his way around the mountains to take the crown in the Mallinicks Bay to Bay 30km road race on Saturday.

The event was organised by the Atlantic Athletic Club, based in Green Point, and is in its fourth year with major sponsors Mallinicks Attorneys. This is considered one of the toughest races on the calendar but Zola?s legs managed to put him over the finish line in a time of 1:38:35 to claim first place and the R1 000 prize money.

Runners started the race at Maidens Cove, Camps Bay, at 06:30 and took the scenic coastal route to Hout Bay Harbour and back, which included the torturous 2km climb up Suikerbossie Hill, 18km into the race.

Current course record holder Neo Molema came in behind his team-mate in a time of 01:39:41, and received R500 for his efforts. Siyabonga Nqabeni (Celtic) rounded off the top three in a time of 01:40:08 and claimed R250 in prize money.

Participants were treated to superb weather for the race, although the sun started to bake competitors towards the end of the race. Despite some slight traffic congestion in Hout Bay, the race ran smoothly and was enjoyed by the athletes.

Leanne Juul managed to hold on to her lead and came over the finish in 2:03:43 to take first place in the women?s division, while another Mr Price Western Province runner, Anneline Roffey, grabbed second place in 2:04:05.

The two front runners had broken away from the pack to take a substantial lead as Nomvuyisi Seti (Mr Price Western Province) made her way over the finish almost five minutes later in a time of 2:09:08.

The race was the first of 2007 in the the King and Queen of the Mountain series, with the next being the Kloof Nek Classic taking place on 4 February.

Many participants took this as an opportunity to enjoy quality distance training in the build-up to the Two Oceans and Comrades marathons later in the year.
