TOP American softballers Natasha Watley and Jessica Mendoza, who starred in the 2006 World Series and 2004 Olympic Games championship successes of the USA, will be in action in Cape Town this week.
The American duo's visit has been funded by the International Softball Federation (ISF).
They will be the first world-class softballers to show off their talents in South Africa.
Outfielder Mendoza and infielder Watley will be guest players in the WP President's team that will challenge the WP A side at the Turfhall Stadium in Crawford on Sunday, 21 January at 16:00. Watley won the best fielder award at the World Series. Big-hitter Mendoza has a bat patented in her name that is sought after across the world.
The presence of the Americans alongside SA players such as Astrid van Kesteren (Glenthorn) and Lynn Conning (Old Mutual Cubs) should see the President's side providing WP A with an unenviable yet invaluable test.
The two SA players are unavailable to represent WP A at the inter-provincial championships at Pietersburg in March. SA cap Glynnis Koopman (Westridge Yankees), also unavailable for the IPT, is on holiday in Australia and will miss the experience of teaming up with the Americans.
The seven WP players selected to represent SA at the World Junior Women's Championship for u/19s in Poland have been included in the President?s squad.
They are Megan Cable and Lauren Mulder (both pitchers), Nawaal Nacerodien and Jackie Adonis (catchers), Amee Campbell (infielder) and Jade Abbott and Harlaine Jacobs (outfielders). The WP A side will include five SA players.
They are Nikki Jones and Almarie Kannemeyer (both pitchers), Kim Nicholson and Candice Stephens (both infielders) and Lindsay Vercuiel (outfielder). The Americans? tour itenary will include coaching clinics on Friday, 19 January and on Tuesday, 23 January at Turfhall Park.
