    Cape surfers rip through Durbs

SURFERS from Cape Town's Southern Suburbs rocked their Durban rivals as they dominated the waves at the second event of the Billabong Junior Series in Durban recently.

Brandon Roberts of Sun Valley soared through five rounds, including the final, without facing defeat as he went on to clinch victory in the Pro Junior u/20 boys' division.

His dramatic finish just before the five minute mark in the final against Rudy Palmboom saw him pocket the R3 500 prize money and notch up 1 000 rating points. Kommetjie resident Brett Shearer also made his presence felt as he placed in joint third position with Kyle Lane.

Kommetjie's wonder girl, Tarryn Chudleigh again put her talents and skill to good use as she claimed her second successive series event title for the year in the Pro Junior u/20 girls' division. The 16-year-old was the most experienced surfer in the final, and her powerful performance in the water put her ahead of Natal surfer Sarah Baum.

The u/16 boys' division saw the most exciting battle of the competition, as Dale Staples (St Francis Bay) emerged from a deep barrel that drew gasps of astonishment from the crowds and earned him 9,0 points in the last minute for victory. Another Kommetjie resident, Michael February, was crowned king of the u/14 boys' division.

His 7,25 and 9,0 point rides in the first five minutes of the final saw him cruise to an easy victory. Staples managed to take another top position as he placed second in the division, followed by Jarred Veldhuis (Kommetjie) in third.Scottburgh's highly impressive newcomer, Slade Prestwich, sealed victory in the u/12 boys' division after posting two seven point rides to crush the winner of the first series event in St Michaels, Dylan Lightfoot (Jeffreys Bay).

The Von Zipper Air Show saw surfers going head to head as they attempted the biggest aerial manoeuvres. Umdloti surfer Josh Redman produced an astonishingly high aerial on the outside pocket as he soared to victory.

The Zigzag Performance Award was handed to February, and the Kustomised Awards went to siblings Rudy and Heidi Palmboom.

The five-series event will continue in Cape Town from 17 to 20 May.
