    War of the Signs
Winston Fryer, against graffiti of any kind

HAS anyone taken the trouble to look around at the huge number of security signs which are now stuck each and everywhere in our suburbs and surrounds?

It seems Chubb and ADT are having a signage war... Just on Kommetjie Road alone there are so many that it should be called Chubb Boulevard or ADT Avenue... Some houses have four or more signs (especially if it is located on a prominent corner or near a traffic light intersection). Here they use much larger signs now and up to six signs are now stuck on each and every wall. A school on Kommetjie Road (er, ADT Avenue) has seven signs advertising Chubb.

Now it seems that bus shelters are the latest targets, and public utility buildings as well, viz the sub station at the entrance to Sun Valley, where a bank of six are all stuck together on the side walls! Incidentally, their signage did not prevent a bus shelter being annihilated on Kommetjie... er Chubb Avenue recently.

I attended a meeting on drugs and graffiti and I mentioned it to the security people but their spokesman replied that these signs are erected on private property... Okay. But surely one sign per house should be sufficient - not four or more! Are perpetrators of crime illiterate, blind, short-sighted, one pint short of a six pack, or what!

There are many businesses that operate on Kommetjie Road (er, Security Street) and they also have their signage prominently displayed for all to see.

Graffiti on walls, bus shelters, churches, street signage is one thing, but security graffiti is fast becoming the new blight on the suburban landscape!

Incidentally, do we know that crime has decreased since we have been hit by all these signs? It would appear not, as witness the recent crime reports you publish each week in your newspaper.

People are still burgled, raped and even murdered, cars are being stolen from driveways, wheels are being removed, etc. The list goes on and on.

I say security companies should not have more than one sign per house!

Estate agents have a code of conduct and are being asked to curtail their signs over weekend showhouses and at other times (admittedly not always adhered to).

But now that the new generation security (much larger) signs are being stuck up by security companies... The time has come to stand up and fight the blight!
