THE latest nominees for the Emzantsi Carnival King and Queen competition have a big heart for helping the community and exemplify what the Emzantsi King and Queen competition is all about - setting a good example for other youths to follow.
In the run-up to the Emzantsi Carnival, happening on Saturday, 3 December, the organisers are looking to crown a young carnival king and queen who have achieved something extraordinary in their young lives that others can look up to.
The Emzantsi Carnival will be held on 3 December between the communities of Sun Valley, Sunnydale, Fish Hoek, Masiphumelele and Ocean View and is intended to be a celebration of the Far South's diverse mix of art and culture.
The organiser of the carnival, Sam Pearce, launched the Emzantsi Carnival King and Queen competition as a platform for showcasing the achievements of the Valley's youths. "We are searching for role-models - young people who have achieved extraordinary things that the children taking part in the Emzantsi parade can look up to."
This week's nominees are two Grade 11 pupils at Fish Hoek Senior High School and were nominated by teachers Alison Grobbelaar and Wendy Beato.
Nikola Raath (17) is head student of the Student Representatives Council and is a very committed member of the school's Interact Club, which supports various community charities. Among others, the club collects sandwiches on Fridays for a crèche in Masiphumelele and raises funds for Red Cross, World Vision and the Living Hope Centre. The club also built homes for the poor under the Habitat for Humanity programme.
Nikola is also a regular participant in outreaches held by her church, the Dutch Reformed Church, during the June school holidays and is also a member of the OIL Reach Out organisation in Fish Hoek.
The second nominee, Luke Kruyt (16), was nominated because of his dedication as a volunteer with The Emma Animal Rescue Society (TEARS). Luke has been a volunteer with TEARS since 2001 and has been responsible for changing the lives of countless abused and neglected animals. He spends every Saturday rescuing animals for TEARS and also helps out with fundraising and advertising, while he has also drawn up a website for TEARS.
He finds the work he does for TEARS to be immensely rewarding and, not surprisingly, looks forward to being a veterinarian one day!
