    Girl goalkeeper scores bronze medal
    Lavern de Vries

THREE years ago, Cavillin September started playing soccer on gravel pitches in Hanover Park. Little did she know that her unusual hobby would see her attain her Western Province schools' colours at the tender age of 15.

Standing at almost 1,7 metres tall, Cavillin started playing soccer with the boys in her area and later became a goalkeeper. "It was just something I could do and enjoyed doing," says the shy teenager.

Cavillin, a pupil at Mountview High, recently returned from a national girls' soccer tournament in Rustenberg. "We played against several schools from around the country. In one of our games we played against Gauteng. We came third and won a bronze medal."

Although she has an avid interest in and passion for soccer, she says she would like to be a computer engineer. "Normally when people see me play they say I am good, so I'd like to take my soccer as far as I can take it, but I also want to study so I can fall back on something."

Cavillin aims to play for the Hanover Park Young Eagles Soccer Club and says she has no qualms about playing in a mixed team. "I don't mind playing with either boys or girls, as long as I can play soccer."

Cavillin, who regards Desiree Ellis, a former Banyana Banyana captain and key member of the Spurs FC that won the national inter-club championship in May, as her role model.

"Not only is she also from Hanover Park, but she is a dedicated and disciplined player. All I can say to the youth out there is to grab opportunities, just like Desiree did, because opportunities don't come along easily so do the best you can with them."
