WHEN I first heard that one of my brother's best friends (aka a brother from another mother) had been seriously injured in a hit-and-run motorbike accident, I was overwhelmed with a sense of anger.
Anger steamed out of me against the man who had done this to him, against the hospital staff for taking so long to allow us to see him and against the police who, from what I was told, were not doing their job properly.
But this anger was quickly put to shame when I learned that the sister of an ex-flatmate/friend, who at the age of only 21, had been involved in a freak accident the very same weekend, tragically passed away last Monday.
Here I was angry that JP was lying in hospital with several broken bones and would be staring down a road paved with months of recovery.
Yet another family was sitting with the eternal grief of losing a precious loved one.
At age 21 this daughter, sister, fiance, and friend had her whole life to look forward to, but instead it was tragically cut short as part of God's divine plan.
Needless to say, all perspective on the matter was quickly brought back down to size.
Yes, it will be months before JP can properly walk again. And yes, he might never regain full feeling in his right arm after having had every single nerve in it shredded. But, at least he is alive.
At least he will have another day with his child, with his family, with his friends, and with all his loved ones. That is, after all, all that really matters at the end of the day.
So often when bad things happen to good people, we ask ourselves why. Why me? Why him? Why her? Why now?
What we should rather be asking ourselves is why not me? Why not him? Why not her? Why not now?
As human beings we are not immortal, and neither are our loved ones. We are given a certain amount of time here on earth and that is that.
No one person's time can be compared or questioned to another's, as God's plan for each and every one of us is unique, as are we.
That said, and with this thought in mind, I have said it before and I will say it again as I cannot stress enough just how short life is, and how important it is to remember this each and every day.
Cherish it, love it, and live it because you just never know what is waiting around the corner. Till next week I say, love the ones you are with while they are still here on earth with you.
