IS it just my imagination or are all the chairpersons of all the major organisations in Retreat men? Why are the women so quiet in Retreat, Steenberg, Cafda, Capricorn and in all the other areas that this humble newspaper tries to reach?
Women do talk to me, but usually in an individual capacity or they are linked to a women's, health or child driven organisation.
Alternatively, the women that do shout very loud are often shouting at each other, to the point of exhaustion, and to the extent that peace orders are needed to keep the feuding neighbours at bay.
Sadly, one cannot ignore that a large number of women that do make it to the newspaper would have preferred to have remained silent, hiding the shame of their beatings. They have usually been, rather unwillingly, shoved into the limelight by a noisier friend or organisation, shouting indignations.
Back at the ranch, chairpersons who have been voted into their positions by a large majority are making the decisions with regards to education, houses, rates, crime, employment, law and order. One wonders: Do men have an extra brain somewhere that helps them make these very important decisions?
Looking back at the many elections I have attended, I have never been part of a pre-election caucus where a group of women were vying to ensure that another woman get sinto a position of power.
Very few women nominate, second and vote for other women to be the chairperson of their organisation. Usually these individuals are drawn into caucuses to insure the election of some other person, who usually has no idea of the priorities of that woman.
A little while ago, I was looking at different education policies for my child, whom I hope will want to attend university at some point in his life. I asked a woman (who actually does live in Retreat) what kind of education policies her children had. She replied: "Oh, I do not know what policies we have. My husband takes care of that."
I was gobsmacked. How can someone allow another person to decide their fate or make a decision that effects you without your knowledge? That is usually the relationship between a parent and a child, a warden and a prisoner, or a nurse and someone who is mentally insane.
So, Retreat women, talk to me. I would really like to hear your thoughts and quote your decisions that you have made as the elected leader in your organisations with regards to education, houses, rates, crime, employment, law and order, as well as issues that effect women, health or children.
Until the next elections...
